The Flight of the Earls
After the submission of the Earl of Tyrone, English power began to expand in Ulster. Eventually, both Tyrone and his neighbour the Earl of Tyrconnell decided to leave their lands, taking their families with them, as English civil servants were taking control of the administration. Under the Law of surrender and Regrant, these lands were now forfeit, and taken by the English Crown in 1607. The Earl of Tyrconnell died in 1607; the Earl of Tyrone lived on for another eight years. They were both buried, in Rome.
